Hillel Lodge announces 2020 award recipients

Annual general meeting to be held online

By Arlene Rosenbloom, President of Hillel Lodge.

The Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge is pleased to announce the 2020 recipients of the Thelma Steinman Direct Service Award and the Shalom Perel President’s Award of Merit.

The award recipients will be acknowledged at the virtual annual general meeting of Hillel Lodge on Tuesday, August 25, at 7 pm. Anyone wishing to attend the Lodge’s 2020 AGM on Zoom, is required to register by contacting Kelly Thompson at Kelly@hillel-ltc.com.

Thelma Steinman Direct Service Award

Monica Stein will receive the Thelma Steinman Direct Service Award.

Monica has been an active member of the Auxiliary of Hillel Lodge for many years. She is a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who has made her family the centre of her life. She taught her children the importance of visiting their Bubby Rose at Hillel Lodge. She was dedicated to Rose, looking after her every need. Through her relationship with Rose, she became an adopted family member to many of the residents, visiting Hillel Lodge almost every day. Treating residents as she would her own family, Monica would hold their hands, gently rub their backs and make them feel special. She always brightened their days! Whether attending and helping with Bingo, the birthday bashes or one of the many holidays that she volunteered for, Monica enhanced everyone’s day with her tremendous enthusiasm.

Monica continues to lend a helping hand and provide guidance to improve the lives of the residents of Hillel Lodge. Her generosity and positive attitude shines through making her a deserving recipient of the 2020 Thelma Steinman Direct Service Award.

“Monica is a devoted volunteer who is dedicated to enriching the lives of Hillel Lodge’s residents. Her kindness, thoughtfulness, gentle approach, and warm smile combined with her willingness to help out in anyway is what Monica is known for by residents, volunteers and staff. Congratulations Monica on this much deserved honour,” said Ted Cohen, CEO of the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge.

Shalom Perel President’s Award of Merit

Russell Kronick will receive the Shalom Perel President’s Award of Merit.

Russell has been on the boards of both Hillel Lodge and the Hillel Lodge Foundation for over a decade. He joined the Board of Directors of Hillel Lodge in 2009 when his mother was a resident. Russell was president of the Board of Hillel Lodge from 2014-2015 when the Lodge celebrated its 60th anniversary. He then served in two positions, past-president of Hillel Lodge and president of the Hillel Lodge Long Term Care Foundation – the latter, a position he held for four years. During those years, the portfolio of the Hillel Lodge Foundation more than doubled from $6 million to over $12.5 million today.

Russell’s dedication to the Lodge is demonstrated by his long-standing volunteerism in time and energy. He and his wife Joan actively support the Endowment Fund they set up as a legacy to provide for Hillel Lodge. Russell exemplifies the spirit of the Shalom Perel President’s Award of Merit, and it is a fitting tribute to bestow this honour on Russell as he retires from his position on the board.

“Throughout his service on both the Foundation and Lodge boards, Russell's contribution has been invaluable to the overall success of Hillel Lodge. The Lodge benefited greatly from his vision and commitment, helping to ensure that this very important community facility continues to thrive and serve Jewish seniors seeking quality long-term care. It has been a pleasure to work with Russell. I could count on his fairness, attention to detail, his desire for collegiality and achievement of results, as well as an adherence to a strictly timed agenda,” said Arlene Rosenbloom, president of Hillel Lodge.
